If you haven't gone, and you're still eligible... go! I went last year, and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Four solid days of eating, and breathing photoj. And although exhausted, you leave there with this renewed spirit. The Eddie Adams Workshop just posted their application and submission guidelines for Barnstorm XV. Looks like they've changed it up a bit, because of recent events, but I'm sure it will be as amazing as ever.

Magnum photographer James Nachtwey was followed by a film crew for two years, through war-torn countries and impoverished lands, documenting him while he documented the horrors in front of him.
Director "Christian Frei used special micro-cameras attached to James Nachtwey's photo-camera. We see a famous photographer looking for the decisive moment. We hear every breath of the photographer. For the first time in the history of movies about photographers, this technique allowed an authentic insight into the work of a concerned photo-journalist."

World Press Photo announces all of their 2002 contest winners, as well as their "Photo of the Year." Can you say "nice.....?" Great stuff from the premiere photo contest in the world.

Super huge CONGRATULATIONS to newspaper photographers Brian Plonka, Rick Loomis, and Barbara Davidson for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, in that little, annual photo contest known as POY.
(now shhh! don't tell anyone. hahaha.)

No need to thank me. We all know it was my procrastination that finally paid off. The NPPA has extended their deadline to next Friday, that'd be February 22, 2002.
Even though they say it's "due to the tremendous response to NPPA's 2001 Best of Photojournalism competition" that they've extended the deadline -- they're wrong it was all for me.
It's now easier than ever to enter. Besides it being free, now you can FTP the images directly to them. You still have to pay 34 cents to mail the entry form in, but FTPing the images is fast and easy...finally someone is thinking...
So if you use fetch, cute ftp, transmit or anyother FTP client, this is what you need to know:
FTP address: 209.213.76.69
user name: photos
password: submit

"As a young girl, her eyes spoke of the suffering of a nation. But no one has ever known what happened to the child with the shocked, staring eyes whom award-winning photographer Steve McCurry fleetingly met in a refugee camp in Pakistan in 1983. Her picture has appeared countless times on the front of magazines, on posters, even on carpets, yet no one has ever been able to trace her."
click the photo of her to find out where she is now.
the nppa contest deadline is friday. enter. it's free. and you can FTP the images.

As you may have heard, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior seems to have shut down the Maine Photographic Workshop program in Cuba. This is incredibly disappointing, as Havana is a remarkable city to photograph. However, we have permission to hold the same workshop at the same time in Oaxaca, Mexico, that is if we get enough students. Oaxaca is not Havana, but it has its own charms. For those of you who have not been there, it is an airy, pastel-colored city infused with the traditions of the Zapotec Indians. I've spent much time there in the early 80’s and consider Oaxaca one of my favorite cities in Mexico.
