"the red sox could field a starting nine just from the caribbean, and fewer than half of the 25 sox players are white. but up in the press box at fenway park, where 23 writers cover every home game for daily newspapers, every one of them is white.
the people who report for and edit the nation's newspapers look less like the people who make and read the news than a decade ago. if newspapers are a mirror that a community holds up to itself, the reflection is mostly white."
is it really a surprise that most newspapers fall short of diversity goals? see how your newspaper ranks, in a study that compared minority employment at each of the nation's 1,448 daily newspapers with a minority population in the coverage area.

dates on the horizon:
the southern short course is this weekend, april 26-28. so if you're going to be in the greensboro, n.c. area... GO! there are some great speakers in the line-up, most notably, my friends/coworkers mike and sue stocker (go listen to them talk about being bad asses, and having the coolest kids in the world, then talk to them afterwards and tell them i sent you!), but stick around to check out all those other folks... nancy andrews, susan gilbert, scott strazzante and marc kawanishi are pretty good too. [grin]
then, in a few months (september 6-8) the women in photojournalism seminar will be in san diego, california. this is a personal favorite of mine because it's practically devoid of ego and it's an incredibly inspirational weekend.
and, last, but not least, the eddie adams workshop deadline is may 15. if you haven't gone and are still eligible (a student or less than 3 years in the biz) i urge you to apply. for the last 5 years the folks invovled have said that next year is going to be the last barnstorm, so just know, that one of these years they'll mean it, and there may not be a "next year." hands down it's one of the most tiring, yet most renewing/inspirational/phenomenal/educational/best weekends you could hope to have in your career.
