ohio university viscom students used their annual dawn to dusk project to fill the pages of this month's zipUSA feature in national geographic magazine.
the work of nine ohio university students is featured in the five-page story. the 45701 essay represents several firsts. not only will 45701 be the first and only zip code from ohio to be featured in national geographic, but the essay is the first "zipUSA" feature to be comprised solely of student photography.
(the national geographic website doens't show much in the way of the student's work, but the magazine will be available on newsstands january 2.)

i'm sad to report that photographer herb ritts died today.
I was given a great book for xmas that now has me googling a bunch of photographers I'd never heard of or forgotten about. This is one such photographer: Nick Knight.
Nick is arguably one of the most influential fashion photogs in the biz and recently decided it would be more fun to do his own thing than to continue working for one of the biggest women's fashion magazines in existence.

i've been checking msnbc's the week in pictures regularly, as in once a week for a few years now, to see the updates. and recently while on there, i stumbled across a new kid in town -- the week in sports pictures -- which seems to be a two-month old addition to the site. the sports pictures have been great, because a lot of it is local highschool or college stuff that usually isn't seen outside its coverage area, and occasionally there's some crazy international surfing competition or australian swim meet or something, where it's always nice to see photos from allsport stud adam pretty making the line-up.
and after a bit of internet hopping, where this site led me to this site which led me to this... i landed on time magazine's pictures of the week which has been blowing my mind. every once and a while the same photo will make both msnbc and time's sites. but for the most part it's an entirely different crop of photos. it's always interesting to see what different editors pick, and then trying to understand the motivation behind the picks. after a few weeks of watching, and comparing, i must say that i'm now partial to the time magazine selection, which seems to concentrate a little more on good, solid photojournalism (like this).

A day in the life of my mouth.

Taking self portraits to new heights (or depths) and with a pin hole camera no less!

My favorite photographer in the whole wide world photographed and narates a beautiful essay on Hawaii that was also published in this month's NatGeo. Truly multimedia story telling.
pdn has launched a new online magazine for emerging photographers called pdnedu. they feature portfolios of up-and-coming photographers, a step-by-step how-to, a guide to what other colleges and universities are doing out there, as well as a multi-media section called storytellers.
this month's storyteller is cpoy-winning yoni brook, who takes us inside a thai monastery in suburban d.c. and in case you missed last month's, it's worth checking out the beautiful images of photographer branca nitzsche, as she gives us an intimate look at a poverty-stricken area of brazil.
[thanks to multimedia guru joe weiss for pointing this out.]
